Surrounded by two beautiful rivers, the historic community of Dunnellon lies centered on the eastern flank of Florida's rich Nature Coast. It earns the reputation as the Treasure of Florida's Nature Coast not only for its geographical location, but for its embodiment of so many of the diverse attractions which make the state-designated Nature Coast an exciting destination for tourists. With its carefully preserved Old Florida character and spirit of hospitality, its spectacular rivers, springs, vegetation and wildlife - all only 15 miles from the warm salt waters of the Gulf of Mexico - Dunnellon is the perfect gem in Florida's natural paradise. Home to Rainbow Springs, Florida's second largest artesian spring which spills between 315 to 795 million gallons of water into the Rainbow River each day, and the meeting place for the mighty Withlacoochee and beautiful Rainbow Rivers, Dunnellon can boast that there is water everywhere year round for the avid water sportsman to enjoy. Fun on the water isn't all there is to life in Dunnellon. History buffs can relive old Florida history with visits to the historic district, and the Archives and Museum of Dunnellon History located in the 1908 depot under restoration by the Historical Society and open during special events. Today Dunnellon's 1,990 or so citizens cherish their past but provide well for themselves and welcome visitors with quality modern amenities and facilities. Though the number of in-town citizens is small, 60,000 people live within ten miles of the Dunnellon city limits. To promote the colloquial charm of this community and attract visitors a group of merchants has organized with a mission to preserve and enhance historic structures while providing a friendly inviting shopping district. Throughout the year the Chamber conducts strolling tours through this quaint area. It' s no wonder that many visitors return to the Dunnellon area again and again. Many visitors eventually put down roots here and stay. And, more and more entrepreneurs and established businesses that seek a balance between quality of life and commerce are finding Dunnellon a great place to call home. |
